You may be familiar with Al Jaffee's Tall Tales. an extremely vertical syndicated newspaper strip just recently reprinted by Harry N. Abrams Books. Here are some gags going in the opposite direction. They're from a collection of Henry Syverson's cartoons entitled Touché, from 1968. By that time, these highly horizontal strips had been running atop the humor page of the Saturday Evening Post for nearly two decades.
The genius of these drawings is in the elasticity of the characters' gestures. They serve to fill the long spaces well, and the figures emphasize movement. They seem like they're going at a frenetic speed though standing still. They're animated cartoons on paper.
