"Shortly after their marriage in the 1940's, Alice and Martin Provensen entered the field of book illustration as a team and have been winning awards, citations, and public acclaim ever since. Their paintings are a collaboration in the most profound sense, their work so completely interfused that the Provensens themselves cannot say precisely where the contribution of one ends and that of the other begins." Or so says the back cover flap of Shakespeare, Ten Great Plays, another in Golden Press's stunning volumes for young readers. If I'd received this one as a birthday present back in 1962, instead of the Huckleberry Hound Story Book I actually did get, I'm sure it would have flown completely over my head further than Hamlet's father's ghost. But then, I may have found Huckleberry Hound tough going, too.
