Been a hard day, nothing went too good? Don't look at me to cheer you up. Don't even look at me to tell you the rest of the lyrics to that song. It turns 50 this year and I'm still not sure what the heck Winwood's singing.
Misery loves company, so here are some plates from a tiny book entitled Hoppla Kultur (which Google Translate renders as "Whoops Culture." Maybe it has an idiomatic meaning? It's subtitled, "50 Bilder zur Herrlichkeit unserer Zeit" or "50 Pictures to the Glory of our Time." I'm assuming said "Time" is really prior to the book's publication date of 1954. The illustrations, by A. Paul Weber, seem a weird conflation of Goya, Stanislav Szukalski, and Edd Cartier (particularly the last one below).
The plates' captions don't seem to need much translation, but maybe that last one is better read as "The Informant."
