Peter Maresca of Sunday Press Books has released another
masterpiece. The publisher of two giant volumes of Little Nemo in Slumberland, as well as Sundays with Walt and Skeezix and by now, astonishingly enough,
many others (“All printed in their original size and colors!”) has another
breathtaking book ready for mailing. It’s White
Boy in Skull Valley, a collection of Sunday comics by New Yorker cartoonist Garrett Price.
Price drew a non-traditional Western in a non-traditional
way. He brought a sparse storybooky style to the Sunday supplement that stayed
simple while other strips in the section were more straightforwardly
illustrative, or just goofy.
A more sophisticated New Yorker approach to the funnies?
Yeah, maybe.
Here are some good examples
of Garrett Price’s, uh, ligne claire from his collection Drawing Room Only.
These are the ones that never graced The New Yorker, appearing instead in other
markets.
