ROLLER POSTERS

This is a stamp done for advertising purposes, featuring the work of Alfred Roller. It was done as a reproduction of a much larger poster, done when lithography was in flower. Here are some other examples of his work.
Roller was a prolific poster artist during the turn of the last century, in the forward-looking period known as the "Vienna Secession," the time of artists such as Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser,  and publications like Jugend and Ver Sacrum.
These posters, with their compressed lettering, prefigure the psychedelic poster movement. The type probably inspired such 70s fonts as the ambiguously-named "Smoke," which may have had Alphonse Mucha's flowing Art Nouveau lettering as an progenitor as well.

Here's another example from the difficult-to-locate (in this country, anyway) book Alfred Roller in Seiner Zeit by Manfred Wagner, published by Residenz Verlag, 1996.
